How to Take Care of a Labradoodle

By Britt Kascjak

The Labradoodle has been growing in popularity. It’s a loving, family-friendly dog that is sure to bring joy to any home.

For many, the promise of a hypoallergenic coat is the reason that poodle mixes stand out.

But, that coveted poodle coat comes with some specific grooming needs to keep it looking sharp and well-maintained.

In this guide, we’re going to take a quick look at the care needed for a happy, healthy Labradoodle.

Nutrition

When choosing dog food for your Labradoodle, pay attention to her unique needs.

If your new Labradoodle is a puppy, she will need a food that provides for the nutritional needs of a growing pup. A puppy-specific food is the best option.

For an adult Labradoodle, choose high-quality food and follow the feeding guidelines on the package.

Make sure to factor your lifestyle into your Labradoodle’s dietary plans. If you are overly active, your dog will burn off more calories and can be fed larger portions.

Finally, if your new labradoodle is entering her golden years, seek out a senior dog formula. These foods are designed to support her aging body.

Exercise

The Labradoodle is an active and playful dog, but not one that has extreme exercise needs.

You can provide the lifestyle your Labradoodle needs with daily walks, hiking, and playtime. After all, this breed loves to play with their people!

This is also a breed that aims to please their owners. This makes training a great opportunity for mental stimulation.

A dog that has been exercised mentally will feel more tired than one that has had only physical exercise. This can be accomplished with mental challenges like training sessions and food puzzles.

Grooming

Brushing and Clipping

If you are going to add a Labradoodle to your family, you may want to build a relationship with a groomer.

These professionals are familiar with the right way to clip your Labradoodle’s coat to keep her looking her best. They are also able to keep her nails trimmed at each appointment.

Between grooming appointments, you will need to brush your Labradoodle daily.

This regular ongoing care will prevent tangles and matting. It’s also a great bonding opportunity for your and your Labradoodle.

Dental Care

Your Labradoodle’s coat isn’t the only thing that needs to be cared for and maintained. Dental care should also be part of your regular routine.

Ideally, you should brush your labradoodle’s teeth daily. But, many dogs dislike the process.

Try to brush her teeth at least once a week to prevent plaque and tartar build-up. This can be done with a more traditional doggy toothbrush or using a small brush that fits on your finger.

If your Labradoodle is strongly against the idea of having her teeth brushed, there are other options to consider.

This includes:

  • Dental water additives
  • Dental gels
  • Dental sprays
  • Dental chews and treats
  • Dental toys

Proper oral care for your Labradoodle doesn’t have to be difficult!

Veterinary Care

Of course,  you should also make an appointment to introduce your new Labradoodle to the veterinarian.

Throughout your dog’s life, your working relationship with your vet is key. You are a team, working together to keep your Labradoodle happy and healthy.

Regular vet appointments will help you identify any concerns as early as possible.
